Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
