Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
