Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
